How we read the game files

Values read from the game files come from Probably Stolen, Steam build 26284217 (hotfix 1.0.0.2), extracted October 29, 2026 from a local installation and compared with the launch build 26263409 (October 28, 2026) and the demo builds 26017150 (October 19) and 25382790 (October 18). We read the starting scenarios, the start-screen labels and which starts the demo allowed, the in-game manuals, the item descriptions for water, testing and purification, the ending texts, and the dialogue of the waste customer and Georgio, together with the game code that decides how dumped radioactive waste is counted, when Georgio brings it back and how the trash and the counter handle it. For the rats guide we read the names, descriptions and tooltips of the rat-keeping items and the Ranching entry in Joe Wild's network, with the game code for Prion Disease, the Gene Scanner, how babies inherit genes and what the Retired Rat Rancher sells; for the appraisal guide, the appraisal guides, the authenticity handbooks and their panels, the mentor's notes, the Appraiser Board dialogue including its promotion offer, the rank and certificate names and the appraisal slip, with the game code for what moves promotion progress. For the Augs guide we read the Augmented Identification Guide, the mentor's note and lines about Augs, the Aug Scanner's text, the explanation of the Threaten (Aug) option, the night-log lines, the kill slip, Security's lines after a shot and at the all-clear, and the Augmented ending, with the game code for how the Aug threat rises, falls and is declared over, what a good kill rewards, that some Augs come disguised as other customers and which difficulties and perks end the run with an Aug takeover; for the lockers guide, the locked crates, the keycards, the chips and the Cryptographic Desequencer with its manual, the Evidence Locker Break-In news, the buyers' lines and the keycard trafficking crime, with the game code for which card opens which crate and what a wrong card does, what Dr. Jackson and Thieves stock, what the Desequencer writes and which crates count as contraband; for the demo guide, the mode names, the "Unavailable In Demo Version" label, the favors in Joe Wild's network, the landlord's and the mentor's lines and the thanks screen, with the demo's code that locked favors, gave the landlord only the option to collect rent, never used the buyout option, left Hard Mode and Endless Mode unrestricted and decided when the thanks screen opened; and for the system requirements page, the settings in the Options menu, including Key Binds, the fullscreen notice for monitors that are not 16:9 and the absence of any controller or text-size setting. For the aquaculture guide we read the names and descriptions of the fish, their roe, fry and products, the two fish feeds and the fish tank, the fish tooltips and statuses, and the Aquaculture entries in Joe Wild's network, with the game code for what Aquaculture needs first, what the starter kit and the Retired Aquafarmer contain, which fish eat meat and which breed, and which materials upgrade the tank. For the starting scenarios table we also read each scenario's starting equipment, the "In Development" text on the start screen and the first-run prompt that recommends the Apprentice, with the game code and start-screen layout that decide which scenarios have a button, in what order and with which icon; for the perks table, the names, effects and flavor text of the starting and reputation perks, the faction names, the text of the perk panel and the calendar's Active Perks list, with the game code that decides which starting perks the new-game screen offers and whether each helps, hurts or neither, that they are not offered on the first run and cannot be changed once a run has begun, and which reputation perks each faction grants at high or low reputation. Pages that still describe the demo say so in the line under their title. One rule is still as read from demo build 26017150: how dumped radioactive waste is counted. Something existing in the files does not mean the game enables it.

How each evidence label is used, how conflicting sources are handled and how to report a mistake are explained in the Editorial Policy.
